“The process of redrawing the boundaries of Indian states based on linguistic, cultural, and administrative considerations.”
After independence, demands grew for states to be reorganized primarily on linguistic lines to promote administrative convenience and cultural unity.
The SRC was set up in 1953 to examine and recommend the reorganization of states. It submitted its report in 1955 recommending the formation of states on linguistic basis while maintaining administrative efficiency.
This act implemented the SRC’s recommendations and reorganized the boundaries of states effective from November 1, 1956.
