Directive Principles of State Policy

“Directive Principles guide the State in making laws and policies aimed at establishing social and economic democracy.”

Introduction

The Directive Principles of State Policy are enshrined in Part IV (Articles 36 to 51) of the Indian Constitution. They set out the goals the State should strive to achieve for the welfare of its citizens.

Classification

  • Economic Principles: Equal pay for equal work, living wage, prohibition of child labour, promotion of cottage industries.
  • Social Principles: Protection of children, youth, and aged, free legal aid, organization of village panchayats.
  • Political Principles: Promotion of international peace and security, separation of judiciary from executive.
  • Environmental Principles: Protection and improvement of environment, forests, and wildlife.

Importance

Though non-justiciable, Directive Principles are fundamental in governance, guiding the State in policy formulation to build a just society.
