Definition
Citizenship is the status of a person recognized under the law as a legal member of a sovereign state.
Constitutional Provisions
The provisions regarding citizenship are primarily found in Part II (Articles 5 to 11) of the Indian Constitution.
Modes of Acquiring Citizenship
- By Birth: Anyone born in India before 1987 is a citizen. Conditions changed after that as per amendments.
- By Descent: Citizenship can be acquired if parents are Indian citizens.
- By Registration: Certain categories like overseas citizens, persons of Indian origin can register.
- By Naturalization: Foreign nationals can become citizens by fulfilling residency and other criteria.
- By Incorporation of Territory: When new territory is merged with India.
Termination of Citizenship
Citizenship may be terminated by renunciation, deprivation, or termination as per the Citizenship Act.
