Animal Tissue
“Tissues are groups of similar cells performing a specific function. In animals, tissues are specialized for different activities.”
Types of Animal Tissues
There are four basic types of animal tissues:
- Epithelial Tissue: Covers body surface and lines internal organs and cavities.
- Connective Tissue: Binds, supports, and protects body parts.
- Muscular Tissue: Responsible for body movement.
- Nervous Tissue: Receives stimuli and transmits impulses.
1. Epithelial Tissue
- Simple Epithelium: Single layer, involved in absorption and filtration (e.g., lining of intestines)
- Stratified Epithelium: Multiple layers, protective function (e.g., skin)
- Ciliated Epithelium: Has cilia to move substances (e.g., trachea)
2. Connective Tissue
- Areolar: Binds skin to muscles
- Adipose: Stores fat
- Ligaments: Connect bones to bones
- Tendons: Connect muscles to bones
- Cartilage: Flexible support (e.g., nose, ear)
- Bone: Hard and rigid structure
- Blood: Fluid connective tissue for transport
3. Muscular Tissue
- Skeletal Muscles: Voluntary, striated muscles attached to bones
- Smooth Muscles: Involuntary, non-striated (e.g., intestine walls)
- Cardiac Muscles: Involuntary, striated muscles in the heart
4. Nervous Tissue
Made of neurons that transmit nerve impulses. Found in brain, spinal cord, and nerves.
